Sculpting a Trade Show Throne for Charmin

What can we say? Sometimes you just need a giant, oversized throne to conduct your business properly!

In an effort to turn heads and elevate brand engagement at trade shows, Smash Design took on this unique and exciting project: creating a grand, golden toilet for the renowned toilet paper brand Charmin. This wasn’t just any promotional piece; it was an interactive, traveling art piece designed to resonate with audiences young and old. We think it speaks to a… real need! Who wouldn’t want to sit on a golden throne? 

Why a Golden Throne?

Charmin is a brand synonymous with comfort and reliability in bathroom products. The marketing team wanted to *ahem* make a splash on the trade show circuit. Our creative team’s goal was to construct something iconic yet functional—a piece that would not only attract attention but also encapsulate the essence of the brand: a luxurious bathroom experience. What better symbol than a throne?

The Design Process

The challenge was to create a trade show sculpture that was not only visually stunning but also lightweight, durable, and portable. Smash Design rose to the occasion by designing this piece as a digital 3D model, then engineering an aluminum frame for strength. After all, Charmin wanted fans to be able to actually sit on this throne! 

With the frame built, we sculpted a hard, thin fiberglass shell around it for weight efficiency. To achieve the regal, eye-catching effect, the shell was coated with a flexible resin and painted with high-quality metallic automotive paints, giving it a lustrous golden sheen that is hard to miss.

To meet the practical needs of trade shows and travel, the throne was designed to be disassembled easily. Each piece can be separated and packed compactly, ensuring the throne can journey from one location to another without logistical nightmares. This modularity makes the golden throne not just a showpiece but a marvel in trade show design.
