Overview
When our partners at Lime Media Group approached Smash Design about a Netflix brand activation, we knew we had to go big. The project required larger-than-life characters from Big Mouth that could travel across the country and stay camera-ready at every stop.
However, the timeline was tight. We had only a few weeks to design, build, and deliver vehicle-mounted sculptures for the “Big Mouth Swallows America” farewell tour.
As a result, our team moved fast and stayed focused. We created a bold activation that helped this fan-favorite series go out with impact.
Process
To begin, we focused on creating sculptures that matched the show’s unique style. At the same time, we engineered each piece for strength and durability.
We also worked closely with Lime Media Group. Together, we ensured the sculptures could handle highway speeds, changing weather, and constant public interaction.
Our process included:
- 3D Modeling & Sculpting: First, we carved characters from high-density EPS foam. This allowed us to keep the weight low while maintaining accurate proportions.
- Hardcoating: Next, we applied a durable polyurea shell. This protected the sculptures from moisture, UV exposure, and road vibration.
- Reinforcement: Then, we added internal supports and mounting points. These ensured safe and secure travel at high speeds.
- Paint & Finish: Finally, we used automotive-grade paints. We matched the show’s colors and added clear coats for long-term durability.
Meanwhile, the team coordinated installation with Lime. They completed safety checks and test drives before the tour began. Because of this, the sculptures stayed secure on the road.
Result
The finished vehicle quickly became a standout attraction. As it traveled across the country, it drew crowds and attention at every stop.
In addition, the sculptures became photo hotspots. Fans shared content across Instagram, TikTok, and X, which boosted organic reach.
Most importantly, the characters held up through the entire tour. They looked just as good at the final stop as they did on day one.
