The World Cup is coming to the USA in 2026! Accordingly, the FIFA World Cup 26 Houston™ Host Committee dreamed up an interactive campaign to celebrate the upcoming football madness in Space City while engaging and supporting the local community. Dubbed “The Art of Soccer,” the resulting pop-up campaign required a premier fabrication partner who could deliver both artistic excellence and engineering precision.
Working with Professional Sports Partners, Smash Design was honored to come on the pitch and sculpt so many giant soccer balls that our World Cup runneth over! Here’s how we helped transform Houston into an open-air football gallery while raising funds for those who need it most:
Process
Creating dozens of giant soccer balls that could serve as both artist spotlights and experiential sports marketing displays required close collaboration with our clients and easily repeatable fabrication techniques. Each ball needed to be instantly recognizable and look real enough to kick, but still lightweight enough for transport and installation. Most of all, they had to act as a blank canvas for local artists and be durable enough to withstand Houston’s legendary sun and rain.
Our process included:
Precision Ball Design: Developing the perfect three-foot diameter form that maintained accurate soccer ball proportions while providing a great surface area for painters. Each pentagon and hexagon panel was carefully mapped to ensure geometric accuracy at scale.
Lightweight Construction Materials: Engineering foam structures that balanced minimal weight with maximum stability. Our design allowed for easy transportation, mounting, and installation throughout Houston while maintaining structural integrity for outdoor display.
Artist-ready Surface Prep: Creating smooth surfaces ideal for hand-painting, ensuring local artists would have museum-quality canvases to showcase detailed work without surface imperfections or texture interference.
Weather-Resistant Coating: Applying specialized hard coats that would protect the foam core while providing optimal paint adhesion, ensuring each finished soccer ball could withstand Houston’s heat, humidity, and storms.
Mounting System: Designing discrete but secure mounting points that allowed each ball to be securely displayed in high-traffic public spaces without compromising the spherical aesthetic or the artists’ designs.
The word we got from local artists is that these soccer balls exceeded expectations, serving as perfect canvases for Houston’s vibrant artistic community to welcome the world of football to Texas. Artists transformed each pristine, white sphere into a unique expression of the city’s culture and the participants’ mission, celebrating both the beautiful game and the beautiful souls hosting it.
Result
The campaign’s impact extended far beyond aesthetics. Local businesses and organizations acquired these one-of-a-kind art pieces by making charitable donations to the Sports Authority Foundation, channeling World Cup excitement into capital support for underserved communities throughout Houston. Each ball became a symbol of how sports, art, and philanthropy can unite to create positive change—and a festive environment!
From fabrication to final display, dozens of our giant soccer balls demonstrated the power of collaborative creativity. Our foam sculptures provided the foundation for local artists to shine, businesses to give back, and communities to come together in anticipation of the world’s biggest sporting event.
This pop-up campaign project perfectly embodied what we love most at Smash Design: using our creative talents to enable artistic expression and community impact. As these colorful spheres continue to appear throughout Houston, they serve as both countdown markers to FIFA World Cup 26™ and reminders of what can be achieved when art, sports, and community come together.
