Project Spotlight: Diane the Shark Sculpture for the Film Premiere of Hoppers

Overview

Anytime Disney and Pixar release a new animated movie, you know they plan to make a BIG splash! That’s why we thrilled when the Lime Media fam reached out for our help creating a one-of-a-kind shark sculpture for the world premiere of Hoppers in Los Angeles. Needless to say, we dove right in!

Our mission? Transform the character of Diane Shark into a big, foam prop sturdy enough to cruise down Hollywood Boulevard in the back of a red convertible. She needed to be full of teeth, attitude, and unmistakable rizz! From our Texas studio to the LA red carpet premiere, this project proved that even marine life can enjoy a good road trip.

Process

Creating a movie-accurate Diane that could survive both photo ops and scenic drives required careful planning and precision craftsmanship. Every detail needed to capture her animated personality. Meanwhile, she had to be engineered for real-world adventures.

Our process included:

  • Character Translation: Working from Disney/Pixar reference materials to ensure our foam Diane matched her on-screen presence. We captured her unique blend of ferocity and charm in three dimensions.
  • CNC Foam Sculpting: Carving Diane from high-density foam blocks and carefully calculating weight distribution. As a result, she’d be a stable (if unconventional) passenger in the soon-to-be-iconic red convertible from the film.
  • Meticulous Dental Work: The most challenging aspect? Individually crafting and placing each of Diane’s signature shark teeth into her foam gums. Every tooth was positioned to match her animated grin. This created that perfect, predatory smile movie-goers will recognize.
  • Hardcoat Application: Applying specialized hardcoat to our foam sculpture to create a durable shell. This shell could withstand outdoor conditions, highway speeds, and countless selfie sessions without losing detail.
  • Automotive-Grade Finishing: Painting Diane with a vivid color palette perfectly matched to the character model with our Pantone matching system. This ensured her sharkskin would gleam under premiere spotlights and maintain its luster during her touring adventures.
  • Convertible Integration: Engineering secure mounting points to safely attach Diane to the red convertible featured in the film. As a result, she’d stay put whether cruising Sunset Strip or posing on the red carpet.

The finished Diane Shark sculpture proved to be the perfect promotional partner for Hoppers! She made her debut at the world premiere in LA, where fans lined up to snap photos with the endearingly photogenic shark. But the real magic happened when Diane hit the road in LA. She cruised past famous landmarks, surprised drivers at stop lights, and brought animated joy to real-world locations.

Result

Our automotive-grade paint job meant Diane looked pristine from every angle, whether under harsh premiere lighting or California sunshine. The hardcoated foam construction kept her lightweight enough for easy transport. Yet, she was durable enough to withstand the elements. Most importantly, those carefully placed teeth maintained their menacing charm throughout her travels.

This project perfectly captured what we love about our work at Smash Design: taking beloved characters and engineering them for real-world adventures. Diane’s successful tour from open road to red carpet proved that with the right materials and craftsmanship, scenes from animated movies can come to life on the streets of your city!

Who says sharks can’t enjoy a scenic drive, anyway? That’s just another day at Smash Design, where we make impossible projects undeniable!
