Project Spotlight: Giant Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl Rings at the 2026 NFL Draft Experience

Overview

The Smash Design team jumped at the chance to sculpt six giant Super Bowl rings for the 2026 NFL Draft in Pittsburgh. These massive foam replicas created a standout photo opportunity for Steelers fans. As the draft took over the city for three days, the rings quickly became a fan favorite.

The project began when our partners at Actual Size needed a fabrication expert. They wanted to create a bold tribute to Pittsburgh’s championship legacy. So, they turned to Smash Design to bring six decades of Super Bowl history to life at a larger-than-life scale.

The rings were installed at Steelers Country in Point State Park. This space served as the central hub for fan engagement during the draft. As a result, the replicas became instant icons. Fans gathered, posed, and celebrated the team’s success in an immersive way.

Process

Scaling championship rings to this size presented a unique challenge. However, our team had tackled similar builds before. We previously created oversized rings for the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers. Even so, producing six rings at once pushed us further.

Each ring required exact detail. In addition, every piece needed to withstand heavy fan interaction and outdoor conditions. Therefore, we approached the project with precision and durability in mind.

Our process included:

Historical Research and Digital Modeling

First, our team studied high-resolution images and official NFL references. Then, we recreated each ring in 3D, covering designs from Super Bowl IX (1974) through Super Bowl XLIII (2008). Every logo, gemstone, and engraving was carefully mapped to ensure accuracy.

Precision Foam Carving

Next, we used large-format CNC routers to carve each ring from high-density foam. This step ensured consistent depth and clean geometry across all six builds. As a result, the digital designs translated perfectly into physical form.

Hand-Sculpted Details

After carving, our sculptors refined every detail by hand. They enhanced logos, sharpened edges, and added dimension. At the same time, they cut and placed real glass stones to replicate the brilliance of diamonds.

Weather-Resistant Hardcoating

Because the rings would live outdoors, durability was critical. So, we applied a specialized hardcoat to each piece. This finish protected the structures from weather and constant interaction.

Metallic Finish Mastery

Finally, our scenic artists developed custom paint techniques. They used metallic automotive finishes to mimic the look of championship gold. In addition, they matched official Steelers colors using precise Pantone mixing. Multiple layers created depth, richness, and realism.

Result

The finished rings exceeded expectations. Throughout the draft, fans lined up to take photos and share their experience online. As a result, the installation became a social media magnet and a centerpiece of the event.

Each ring told a story. From the Steel Curtain era to modern championships, the display connected generations of fans. Moreover, the oversized scale made every detail easy to see and appreciate.

By combining engineering and artistry, Smash Design created more than a display. We built an experience that honored Pittsburgh’s legacy while supporting a high-energy public event. Next, the rings will move to Acrisure Stadium for continued display.

Working with Actual Size reinforced why we love this work. These sculptures brought joy to thousands of fans. They also added a bold visual element to one of the NFL’s biggest events. Ultimately, projects like this go beyond props. They create connections, spark memories, and celebrate fandom at its best.
