When the Houston Astros organization approached Smash Design to create new cargo for their iconic home run train at Daikin Park, we knew we had to swing for the fences! Not only are the Astros our local major-league ballclub, but our whole team are big baseball fans. The artists here at Smash Design Studios were tasked with sculpting and painting 25 larger-than-life baseballs to adorn the train, adding a fresh and exciting element to one of baseball’s most iconic ballpark attractions.
The Challenge
The Astros faced a unique situation: Their ballpark sold new naming rights and was rebranded from Minute Maid Park to Daikin Park. This big change meant that the train’s original freight of giant oranges, which had been a nod to Minute Maid’s orange juice, was no longer relevant. The team needed a creative solution to update this fan-favorite feature while maintaining its eye-catching appeal to fans of all ages.
The Astros organization wanted to replace the oranges with big, durable sculptures that would withstand the test of time—not to mention the occasional moonshot home run on to the train tracks! As specialists in creating cool, colossal art for big-league brand activations, Smash Design was the perfect team for the job.

Our Process
A lot of work went into creating the new train cargo, from conception all the way through the final reveal on Opening Day 2025:
- Design and Planning: We worked closely with the Astros’ brand team to ensure our designs aligned with their vision and the overall aesthetic of Daikin Park. The decision to use baseballs as the new cargo was a natural fit, celebrating the sport and the Astros’ history. These balls were designed using 3D modeling software.
- Sculpting: Using large-scale CNC machines, we carved the baseballs out of high-density styrofoam. This material allowed us to create lightweight yet sturdy sculptures perfect for the train.
- Hardcoating: To ensure durability, we applied a specialized hardcoat to each baseball. This step was crucial in protecting the sculptures from the elements and potential damage.
- Finishing Touches: We used high-quality automotive paint to give the baseballs a glossy, professional finish. Vinyl decals were then applied to add a logo to each ball representing key moments from the past 25 years the team has played at the downtown Houston ballpark.
- Installation: Our team worked alongside the Astros’ staff to carefully install each baseball onto the home run train, ensuring they were secure and positioned for maximum visual impact.
Our team has the privilege to work with household-name brands all the time, but we’d be lying if we said it wasn’t a special thrill to create artwork that we can now enjoy every time we watch the Astros play in Houston!

The Brand Activation
The newly renovated home run train at Daikin Park was revealed to the public during pre-game celebrations at the ballpark’s first game of the 2025 season. The iconic train now hauls 25 stunning, mega-sized baseballs that bring a fresh energy to this memorable Astros tradition. The transition from oranges to baseballs not only solved the rebranding challenge but also created a more direct connection to the game itself. Fans and players alike have been wowed by our attention to detail and the enhanced visual spectacle of the train.
